ATS-friendly resume format: the do's and don'ts that decide if you're parsed

Content gets you the interview, but format decides if the ATS can read your content at all. A beautiful template that breaks parsing can drop half your keywords before a human ever sees you. Here are the rules.

Do

• Single column, text-based layout.
• Standard section headings ("Experience," "Skills," "Education").
• Standard fonts and simple bullet points.
• A clean skills section so the ATS reliably extracts your stack.
• Export a text-based PDF (selectable text, not a scanned image).

Don't

• Two-column layouts — parsers often scramble the reading order.
• Text inside images or graphics — invisible to the ATS.
• Tables and text boxes for layout — frequently mis-parsed.
• Critical info in headers/footers — sometimes ignored.
• Fancy icons replacing words — the machine reads words, not pictures.
